Coming up in our medal auction on Wednesday 19th February, which also happens to be our 1000th Auction, is this highly desirable and sought after Army Gold Medal.
The Army Gold Medal was awarded to members of the British Army serving in campaigns during the 1806-14 Peninsular War and the War of 1812.
1810 Field Officers 33mm Army Gold Medal for Vittoria to Major John P. Hawkins (MAJOR I P HAWKINS) with Pyrenees and Nivelle clasps, extremely fine and glazed in lunettes, with replacement ribbon buckle. With handwritten research from the original owner who purchased the medal from Hayward and Hall of London in August 1970.
Includes letter signed by Donald Hall of Hayward and Hall stating "His death is noted in Hart's Army list of 1859 and the short extract given below is taken from The Royal Military Calendar Vol 4 (1820): - Entry Number 1282 Lt Col John P Hawkins CB Lieut 70th foot 21st April 1802, Capt 24th Aug 1804, Capt 68th Foot 5 July 1806, Major 17th Sept 1812 and Lt Col 21st June 1813. Served in Spain and Portugal and has received a medal and two clasps for the battles of Vittoria, Pyrenees and Nivelle. He is a Companion of the Bath".
