The different types of ancient coins for sale

The first ancient coins were ‘tokens’ or ‘discs’ which were made from electrum, an alloy of silver and gold, and they first originated in the 7th Century BC.

Many cultures around the world used these as a form of payment long before the birth of the Roman Empire, which has since become synonymous with the ancient coins depicting its rulers.

Most of the Roman coins found in the UK were struck between 140BC and 390AD and minted predominantly from gold, silver or bronze. Some were cast from orichalcum, a metal with a similar appearance to brass.

At Warwick & Warwick, we often have many different types of ancient coins for sale – including:

  • Byzantine coins
  • Celtic coins
  • Greek coins
  • Medieval coins
  • Roman coins
  • Roman Republican coins
  • Roman Imperial coins
  • Roman Provincial coins

Even if a particular ancient coin is not listed above, we can still provide expert assistance – get in touch or call 01926 499031 for an informal discussion.
