'B' Company were ordered to attack St. Joost to extract 'C' Company who were cut off. At the beginning of the attack our supporting troop of tanks were knocked out by S.P. guns. As a Platoon Commander I led my men on and met heavy fire from a machine gun. My men gave covering fire, I crawled to the right of them, destroyed the gun with a 36 grenade and killed the crew of three with sten gun fire. We advanced a further twenty yards and met fiercer opposition from a machine gun in an out-house and rifle fire from another house. I dashed forward, threw a grenade into the out-house and followed in firing my sten, killing a team of four. I then entered the house from the rear, I threw grenades in rooms and fired my sten, some were killed and the remainder trying to escape, I shot down. The platoon then had to hold the house while other platoons advanced. The Company Commander on his check said that I had killed in all, 22 Germans.", after fierce bidding finally sold at an impressive £6500!
