Coins, Medals, Militaria and Banknotes Auction Report 16th April 2025

16th April 2025 Coins, Medals, Militaria and Banknotes Auction had some very interesting lots and strong live bidding through www.easyliveauction.com plus commission and telephone bids.

The Medals and Militaria section had some special items this sale, especially lot 36A, a Hurricane pilot's WW2 Distinguished Flying Cross (1943), 1939-1945, Africa (North Africa 1942-43 bar), Defence Medal, BWM and Memorial Scroll to Flight Lieutenant C.H.S. Kirkus D.F.C. Royal Air Force, Cyril Harley Sergeant Kirkus was killed in action flying a Hurricane fighter bomber from 241 Sqn while attacking German ground defences on Baldy Hill in Tunisia on 23rd April 1943 and is buried in Tabarka Ras Rajel War Cemetery. you can read more of Cyril's heroic actions on our website, sold with a final hammer price of £2,000.

   

                  

Lot 52 contained Fairbairn Sykes 1st Pattern Commando knife by Wilkinson Sword, 1940-41 issue with 2 inch S crossguard, ricasso marked The/F-S/Fighting/Knife, reverse Wilkinson Sword Co London over crossed swords, knock to pommel, light pitting to length of blade otherwise near extremely fine, Fairbairn Sykes 2nd Pattern, light rust/pitting to blade, 2 stamped on pommel overall good very fine and Bolo knife presented on wooden plaque with London Scottish Regiment emblem sold for an impressive £950!

  

Lot 54 featured a Japanese Wakizashi with wooden scabbard, light marks to blade otherwise extremely fine with visible hamon line, brass Habaki, wooden handle held by single wooden peg, no marking to tang, writing on scabbard, comes with Japanese licence and Nihon Bijutsu certificate, rough translation - This Document certifies that this sword has undergone examination by the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai (The Society for the Presevation of Japanese Art Sword) and is classified as a Specially important Sword. Dated: October 3, Showa 45 (1970) Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozen Kyokai, after fierce bidding finally sold for a respectable £1,250!

    

Lot 61 Japanese Wakizashi with wooden scabbard, light marks to blade otherwise extremely fine with visible hamon line, wooden handle held by single wooden peg, steel Habiki, small indentation to scabbard otherwise near extremely fine, again attracted competitive bidding and sold for a hammer price of £1,000!

    

From our Banknotes section lot 165, an 1882 (17 Nov) type 1 postal order for 1 shilling, hand stamped 'TAUNTON NO 17 82 M.O & S.B' and 'Taunton 001292' sold for £750.

Moving on to the coin section of the sale, contains my favourite, lot 260, an 1847 'Gothic' plain edge crown extremely fine, beautiful blue toning to obverse and copper/blue toning to reverse, a wonderfully unique example of a highly sought after coin, with a final hammer price of an impressive £8,250!

    

Lot 228 was an Aethelred II. 973-1066 Long cross penny, weight 1.67g extremely fine. (S.1151) sold for a respectable £430!

   

From our gold coins, lot 336 our highest selling item of the sale, Royal Mint 2022 5oz gold proof coin FDC, in wooden presentation case with certificate, sold for a grand total of £10,000!

    

Our final mention and our second highest selling lot, lot 347 2023 'King Charles III Definitives and Coronation' proof cased set of 10 with £5, £2, £1, 50p (2), 20p, 5p, 2p and 1p, slight discolouration on some, with Royal Mint certificate, No. 22/30, received a final hammer price of £9,000!
